LUCILLE LONDON.png

This exquisite Victorian-era crescent pendant began its life as a stick pin before being thoughtfully converted into a wearable charm. Retaining its original French eagle head hallmark and an unidentified maker’s mark, this piece offers a glimpse into fine 19th-century craftsmanship.

Set in rich 18ct yellow gold, the crescent features an elegant openwork gallery that allows light to pass through the stones, enhancing their sparkle. At its heart are four natural rose-cut diamonds, their soft shimmer beautifully complemented by three hand-cut blue paste stones. These pastes, designed to mimic sapphires, are two distinct shades—a striking bright blue at the centre and deeper hues on either side. The original stick pin’s shaft has been repurposed as the bail; it has a rosy gold tone that subtly contrasts with the vibrant yellow gold of the crescent.

In the Victorian era, paste was a respected and carefully crafted alternative to precious gemstones. It was frequently used alongside diamonds in fine jewellery, particularly when sapphires of desirable size and quality were not readily available. Unlike today’s mass-produced synthetic stones, antique paste was hand-cut and polished, often displaying remarkable depth and brilliance. The choice to use paste here suggests that the jeweller intended to create a visually striking contrast with the diamonds while maintaining the piece’s delicate and harmonious aesthetic.

Celestial motifs were immensely popular in Victorian jewellery, symbolising change, guidance, and feminine energy. The crescent moon, in particular, was associated with growth and protection, making it a meaningful gift or personal talisman. The use of both diamonds and rich blue pastes could further enhance this symbolism, representing clarity, wisdom, and the night sky.

With its graceful curves, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a rich connection to Victorian jewellery traditions, this pendant is not only a stunning antique but also a piece steeped in history and sentiment.
